SmartKey Deadbolt Lock Bumping Prevention | Kwikset SmartSecurity Blog

Kwikset is committed to delivering unmatched security features to homeowners and puts the safety of our customers above all else. This commitment is why we invented our patented SmartKey™ security technology – and why we continue to expand and improve the security features we offer to homeowners through our products.

This year, Kwikset is launching the latest version of SmartKey, which includes new security features that enhance protection against uncommon and sophisticated forced entry techniques.

All SmartKey products, since its introduction in 2008, include patented technology not found in other pin and tumbler locks that help protect against two of the more common and undetectable attack methods, lock picking and lock bumping. SmartKey cylinders feature ANSI Grade 1 security, are bump-proof and highly pick resistant while also passing the most stringent security standards, UL 437, par 11.6 & 11.7.

We know that protecting your home and family are among your top concerns, so we’ve answered a few questions below about what makes Kwikset SmartKey locks the best option for your home.

  1. What is SmartKey security?

SmartKey is the patented technology only offered in select Kwikset keyed entry products, including electronic locks, deadbolts, knobs, levers, and handlesets. SmartKey includes security features not found in traditional pin and tumbler locks that help protect against the most common lock defeat methods – lock bumping and picking. Additionally, SmartKey re-key technology allows homeowners to easily re-key their locks to render lost or unreturned keys invalid and to enable one-key convenience.

SmartKey products include patented technology not found in other pin and tumbler locks that helps protect against two of the most common and undetectable lock defeat methods – lock picking and lock bumping. The latest version of SmartKey also has new security features that enhance protection against uncommon and sophisticated forced entry methods.

The latest version of SmartKey includes new security features that enhance protection against uncommon and sophisticated forced entry techniques. These updates expand on the advanced security features found in previous versions of SmartKey.

  1. Is my current Kwikset SmartKey lock secure?

Yes. The current version of SmartKey available in the market today is very secure. All SmartKey products, since its introduction in 2008, include patented technology not found in other pin and tumbler locks that help protect against two of the more common and undetectable attack methods, lock picking and lock bumping. SmartKey cylinders feature ANSI Grade 1 security, are bump-proof and highly pick resistant, while also passing the most stringent security standards, UL 437, par 11.6 & 11.7.

With the latest version of SmartKey, we have increased the resistance to uncommon and sophisticated forced entry techniques on the lock as well, giving homeowners even more protection than before. This is an example of Kwikset’s continued commitment to providing new, innovative security features unmatched by competitors.

  1. What is lock bumping and picking?

Lock bumping is an undetectable technique used by intruders to break into homes. Using a “bump key”, intruders can gain illegal access into a home by manipulating the components to open the lock without the homeowner’s key.

Lock bumping is traditionally used on a pin and tumbler design lock and SmartKey technology purposefully protects homeowners against bump break-in attempts with the Kwikset patented BumpGuard technology.

Lock picking is another undetectable way intruders break into homes by manipulating components of the lock to open it without a key. The unique design of SmartKey gives the lock superior pick resistance compared to traditional pin and tumbler locks.

  1. Where can I find SmartKey technology?

Kevo 2nd Gen will be the first smart lock with the new, advanced SmartKey security. It will also be available in Premis and will be rolled out in many other Kwikset products throughout 2016, eventually becoming the new standard for SmartKey security. All SmartKey cylinders, no matter when they were purchased, meet or exceed Grade 1 standards and offer consumers the highest level of protection from lock picking and bumping, the two most common and undetectable methods of lock break-ins.
